Participants will also be provided with knowledge of safety management system standards, and specifically, auditing against the international standard ISO 45001:2018. Awareness of auditing compliance with applicable OH&S legislative requirements and/or industry specific accreditation or specification systems against agreed benchmarks is also included.

The simple premise of this course is that participants will be able to conduct an OHSMS Audit by following the requirements of these standards.

  • The AUDIT PROCESS described in ISO 19011:2018
  • The AUDIT CRITERIA detailed in ISO 45001:2018
  • The RISK APPROACH defined by ISO 31000:2018
  • There are no prerequisites for this course. However it is assumed that participants have a good working knowledge of ISO 45001:2018 and are employed in a relevant OHS role and have access to an organization to conduct workplace-based assessment tasks in order to gain the nationally recognized units of competency
  • SAI Global has a number of non-accredited introductory ISO 45001 courses to assist participants to develop a fundamental skills and knowledge of ISO 45001:2018
  • It is recommended that this course is completed following completion of the Online ISO 45001:2018 Foundation course
  • This course is designed for people who have managerial responsibilities for their organization’s OHSMS and/or are responsible for managing, monitoring and auditing the performance of the system. It is also designed for health and safety practitioners who have been or will become involved in OH&S assurance audits, second party (i.e. vendor) audits and/or third-party audits
  • The course focuses on developing the knowledge and practical skills of participants in the principals and practices of auditing the performance of OHSMS

This course also forms part of the five-day Lead Auditor course for those participants planning to become an OHS Lead Auditor.

This course covers the following modules:


  • Module 1: Course Introduction
  • Module 2: An ISO 45001:2018 OHSMS, this module will introduce you to the occupation health and safety concepts
  • Module 3: ISO 19011 Auditing Management Systems, This module will provide you with an overview of the audit process and related concepts

The below modules will take you through an audit of an Occupational Health and Safety System against the ISO 45001 Standard, based on the PDCA cycle step of “Plan”:

  • Module 4: Auditing an OHSMS- Plan
  • Module 5: Auditing an OHSMS- Do
  • Module 6: Auditing an OHSMS- Check
  • Module 7: Auditing an OHSMS- Act
  • Module 8: Writing an Audit Report
  • Module 9 Course Summary, this will summarize the course and outlines details on your assessment activity completion
  • Module 10: Course End Assessment
  • Offline Assessment Activities Workbook

This course takes approximately 5-7 hours online with additional offline assessment activities

This course covers the following topics:

  • OHSMS based on ISO 45001:2018 including ‘Process Approach’
  • ISO 45001:2018 requirements including context; worker needs interests and participation and interested parties; scope and objectives of OHSMS; OHS Policy and Planning; Risks and opportunities to the OHSMS; Provision of resources and support; Hazard identification and elimination and controls; operation; performance evaluation and improvement

The purpose of this online course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to conduct an internal or external health and safety (OH&S) management system (OHSMS) audit and to evaluate an organization’s arrangements for identifying hazards.

On successful completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Understand the application of ISO 45001:2018 to an OHSMS
  • Understand and explain how the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) framework relates to the process approach promoted in ISO 45001:2018
  • Prepare and plan to conduct an audit on an organization’s OHSMS
  • Conduct an effective audit for their organization or any other organization
  • Systematically examine an OHSMS against the audit criteria ISO 45001:2018
  • Undertake audit activities including gathering objective evidence
  • Audit and evaluate an organization’s OH&S performance
  • Learn and apply risk management techniques to identify OH&S issues
  • Upon successful completion of online quiz, participants can print their own Certificate of Achievement
  • To receive a Certificate of Attainment, participants must complete and submit the Offline Assessment/Post Course Assessment (PCA) and be deemed Competent
